An independent line of execution. The same method may be used in multiple threads. As a thread executes instructions, any variables that it declares within the method (the so-called automatic variables) are stored in a private area of memory, which other threads cannot access. This allows any other thread to execute the same method on the same object at the same time without having its automatic variables unexpectedly modified.
